Debra Betts, PhD
RN, BHSc (Acupuncture), PhD
With a background in nursing Debra studied acupuncture in London, graduating in 1989. Returning to New Zealand she established a private practice specialising in pregnancy and women’s healthcare, undertaking a teaching position at the New Zealand School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1995. She developed and began offering acupuncture courses to midwives in 1997, with the publication of her book "The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth" in 2006.
Her interest in understanding research concepts began through using acupuncture studies to communicate and promote clinical practice with western health practitioners, and led to the completion her PhD thesis through the University of Western Sydney in 2014.
Debra lives in Wellington with her family. She is the programme coordinator for the Master’s degree at the New Zealand School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, acts as a supervisor at the Lower Hutt hospital antenatal acupuncture clinic and lectures internationally on the use of acupuncture in pregnancy, labour and postpartum.
